Testing Results for Dylan

I’ve gotten several e-mails asking about Dylan’s diagnosis. Thank you guys so much for your concern and support. I appreciate the cards, girls night invitations, and advice. I need all the help I can get. 😉

I’m so glad that we took the time and expense to have Dylan tested by this psychologist. He ran every test he had on Dylan, but 2. Dylan has been officially diagnosed with Inattentive ADHD.

Here’s what parents with children of Inattentive ADHD say:

  • “He seems like he’s always daydreaming. He never answers when I talk to him. I wonder if he hears me.”
  • “He loses everything. I’ve had to buy him 4 new lunchboxes since school started.”
  • “I’ll ask him to go up to his room and get dressed, and ten minutes later I find him playing with his toys with only his shirt on.”
  • “He can’t retain what he learns because he misses instructions and explanations in school. Even though we work so hard on his schoolwork at night, by the next day he’s forgotten everything.”
  • “Our teacher called her his ‘space cadet,’ and another her ‘random student.”

We’ve been to our pediatrician a couple times now and she grabbed these books from her shelf and made me check them out:

ADHD A Complete and Authoritative Guide and

Taking Charge of ADHD – she said this one will “blow my mind” (yep her words)

I’m reading them and learning a lot. Back to Dylan’s diagnosis. Here are some of his deficits, out of 100%:

Verbal Comprehension – 70%
Working Memory – 60% (below average)
Processing Speed – 34% (what?!?)

Working memory measures the general ability to sustain attention, concentrate, and exert mental control. Processing Speed is the ability to process visually perceived nonverbal information quickly and with concentration and rapid eye-hand coordination.

Understanding Directions – 60%

Dylan showed deficits in both impulsive, sustaining attention, and the sub-categories of vigilance, focus, prudence, consistency, and stamina. In short, Dylan’s performance suggests that he tends to be impulsive, inconsistent, fatigues easily, and fails to sustain attention in either visual or auditory channels over time.

Recommendations:

1. Dylan consult a pediatrition to determine medication regimen.
2. Typical recommendations:

  • Sit next to teacher,
  • Establish eye contact and touch student when oral information is being communicated
  • Provide multi sensory inputs to facilitate learning and retention (backing up auditory instructions with visual aids and hands on learning experiences)
  • Providing instructions one at a time.
  • Providing supervision, redirection, and encouragement
  • Teach organizational skills
  • Establish a team between professionals, parents, and school personnel
  • Allow breaks as needed

3. See an occupational therapist for strengthening perceptual/motor skills.

4. Check out other resources: Taking Charge of ADHD, Driven to Distraction, Homework without Tears.

5. Individual psychotherapy may prove helpful in promoting and enhancing social skills and self-control.

I realize this is a LOT of information, but I thought that if this could help one other mother out there then it would be worth it.

I never would have realized that Dylan was having these kinds of problems if we hadn’t had him tested. I’m glad we have a diagnosis but I’m more appreciative of all the individual tests that confirm what specifically we need to work on.

Big Boy Bed!

What’s new at our house? A big boy bed!

Over the weekend Jason got on Craigs List and found a toddler bed for Drake. I was impressed because we decided to look online Friday evening and by Saturday afternoon it was in our house and fully assembled. Thanks Honey!

The older 2 boys had a race car bed, so we thought it only fair for Drake to have a similar one. Isn’t this fire truck so cute!

Drake loves it. Unfortunately, he’s still waking up several times a night. Now he just walks downstairs and cries at my bed instead of screaming in his crib. Hmmm. I’m thinking habit.

My SIL got this “Mr. Grumpy” shirt for Drake. Talk about appropriate. Do you like how he posed for the picture. 😉

Bye Bye Basketball!

This weekend was the first weekend we didn’t have basketball games! Basketball season for my boys is finally over. Wooo hooo! Yes, that is a picture of Davis’ male coach wearing a dress. I have no idea what that’s all about – something about a bet with the kids. hmmm

I can’t tell you what a relief it is to be finished with practices 2 – 3 times a week and games on Saturday. We are finally free. (Until swim team starts.)

Snow Day!

We have had the most beautiful winter. It’s been warm, sunny, and so enjoyable – until yesterday.

I sent a picture via camera phone to my friend Melissa in Utah. She’s been grumbling about their constant cold weather and snow. I thought it might cheer her up a bit. It did. 😉

The kids loved it and had a great time playing in the snow.

I, however, felt like I was visiting another state. Yesterday is was beautiful and like 65 degrees. It’s been so warm I’ve been considering short sleeved Easter shirts for my boys. This was so out of the blue and strange to me.

Messy Pants!

Drake is now officially eating food. Yeah! However, this long awaited struggle has come with a down side.

Needless to say cheetos are now banned from the house. And this handprint is in my bedroom! As you can imagine my walls are a mess and my floor is worse. I had forgotten how messy toddlers are. So today I spot cleaned my carpets and touched up the paint in the house. Again!

When I was getting ready this morning, Drake picked up his brush and the hairspray and tried to do his own hair. Too funny! He cleans up pretty well don’t you think. 😉 (He LOVES to get this hair done.)

One of the perks of high functioning autism (for Davis, not me) is that he has the most amazing memory. Over the weekend he asked if we could get the Matchbox Hero City out of the attic. What!?! He got this when he was 5 years old. It’s been so long since I’ve seen this I had to check 2 attics before I found it. Now he’s on a rampage to find the cars that go with it. Good Luck Davis, I think I might have donated them. {{oops}}

While I was combing the attics I found the Surprise Box that has the Blue’s Clues toys in it. Drake is a Blue’s Clues FANATIC!! I’m not exaggerating. He’s been in hog heaven playing with his Handy Dandy Notebook, play house, books, and toys. Lucky me!

Grandparent Post

Over the weekend our family was a mix of American Idol, Guitar Hero, and America’s Funniest Home Videos! Notice Drake really getting into it. He was actually “singing”. ha ha

Guitar Hero has brought a new dimension to our family togetherness. Not only are there now fights for the guitars, but Davis is singing rock songs instead of Justin Timberlake. {{bummer}}

Even Toby (aka “Bobby” to Drake) got some love.

Dear Boys

Dear Davis & Dylan,

I know that we have had a tough week. But I want you to know that I am not your friend, I am your Mommy. I am determined to do my best as a Mommy and raise you to be wonderful husbands and fathers. No matter what it takes.

I overheard you guys complaining about me the other night and I want you to know that it didn’t hurt my feelings. I’ve complained about you to your daddy a lot this week too!

I’m sorry that I have to teach you to responsibility.

I’m sorry that you choose to learn the hard way about the primary principle of cause and effect – in this case known as consequences to decisions.

I’m not quite sure where you got the idea that:

  • Life is fair.
  • Life is easy.

I certainly don’t believe either of those statements. Life is hard work and completely unjust!

I know it’s tough that when you make life harder for Mom, you then have to do some of her chores to make life easier for Mom – but that’s just how it works in our house.

“Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it.” I hope that we don’t have to repeat the entire proceess over tomorrow, but if we do, I’ll love you no matter what. It will be hard to LIKE you, but I’ll always love you.

Love you when you’re choosing right and wrong,

Mommy

Valentine’s Day Celebrations

My man doesn’t get enough love on my blog, poor guy! He planned a double date for us with some friends for Valentine’s Day. Jason arranged for us to eat at Del Frisco’s steak house. Yummy!! I always feel so grown up when I eat at a swanky restaurant.

Oh well, I guess not grown up enough! he he We had the best time: great conversation, great food, and great company. Thanks honey!

Valentine morning I made the boys pancakes (even though I was so tired!!) and gave them their sweet treats. They got watches. Davis was so busy programming his, he wouldn’t look up for a picture. Needless to say they loved it!

I found these awesome Ring Pop Valentines and they were a hit. Here’s Dylan’s class posing for a picture.

Dylan’s Valentine

I don’t know about your boys, but mine won’t tell me a thing about their love life. So every year, I buy 2 extra sets of chocolates and let the boys know that they’re welcome to give it to their “Valentine” if they’d like to.

Dylan’s Valentine

Every year they take me up on it. This is how I find out who they’re crushing on. (sneeky I know) It’s nice to know that my boys have such great taste in girls. I met both their Moms at the party and I approve. 😉

Davis got a little crazy with the camera at his party. He took this picture of me and Drake.

I finally found out what happened to Dylan’s 100 day project. He told me that his teacher let all the other kids take theirs home but he didn’t get to.

I was a little worried with all the problems we’ve been having. However, I was delighted to find out that our 100 eyeballs are now on display. This was such a wonderful thing for him!

I hope you all had a great Valentine’s Day with your loved ones.
