Peach Pit Here I Come!

As I’m frantically making preparations for Dylan’s birthday party and my Mother & MIL to come stay with me this weekend, I’m rerunning old episodes of 90210 in my head. Yep! It starts tonight on the CW.

I’m fully aware that I am now in my 30’s, However, I’m still a kid at heart and I have a feeling this will be my new guilty pleasure this season. {{giddy}}

About Laurie

I Hate New Technology

So I’ve been reading up on how to promote Tip Junkie. Ok, that’s an understatement. I’ll come clean and admit that I’ve been completely obsessed with learning how to market Tip Junkie. Why? Because I have this unceasing drive.

I don’t understand it, either. Sometimes I feel like I’m selfish and I just want to have something that’s successful that I can call my own. My kiddos are hard and I need another outlet that’s my own and something I can be proud of. That could totally be it.

However, I really do feel like this is one of my purposes in life. I’ve done a lot of soul searching and I really feel like this is what I am supposed to do. Which explains this crazy drive to keep pushing myself. I’ve been told my entire life that I have “unusual talents”. Well – here you go – I’ve found a place to put them to good use.

Anyway, one of the ways to market your blog, in case you’re interested, is participating in social networks. I love to feel useful and helpful. So I’m open to helping others a little more. However, I HATE new technology. Yes, I married a tech junkie and he’s constantly uploading new versions of everything that can be upgraded. I rely on him a lot. However, with blogging it’s been different – I’m want to be on my own. Which is why I can get really frustrated!

Anyway, my vent is over and to make a long story short{{er}} – You can join me over on Twitter, if you’d like. We can tweet together.

It only took me an entire DAY to figure out that there’s nothing to figure out. Just type in a sentence and the people who have joined your network see it. No brainer. Why do I have to make everything so hard? {{Lisa – that’s a rhetorical question}}

About Laurie

My life is not Glamorous

I’m so behind on my blog. What happened to the good ol’ days when I could blog for hours? {{reminiscing}}

I have a lot going on right now:

Dylan’s birthday party is Friday, I’m hosting a baby shower for my neighbor and friend next Wednesday, and then Dylan is getting baptised the following Saturday. Jason just announced he has work stuff next week and my mother-in-law called and wanted to know if they could come stay with us if the hurricanes take a turn for the worst. {{hurricanes – panic!}}

To top it all off – Drake wants to potty train. What?!? Are you kidding me? I tried to get Davis to potty train for a year and Drake doesn’t it without my consent. {{Drat!}} I keep telling him that “pull ups are big boy pants” but he’s not buying it. He’s constantly taking off his pull up to go potty. This is followed by a mandatory congratulatory high five and hugs. We get him dressed again to repeat a couple minutes later. Geeze!

You’ve probably already read Chanda‘s account of what happened when we helped a man having a stroke. It happened a while ago but I’m still freaked out about it. I drive pass the Sonic/Auto Zone several times a day and I can’t help but feel my mortality.

I don’t like it.

Mother of Boys

First Day of School

I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out this year for the boys. Davis & Dylan got great teachers and all their close friends are in their class.

I even lucked out and Laurie M. & Wendy’s kids are in each of my boys classes. Whoohoo! Now I’ll be able to call them to get updates on activities, homework, projects, and friendship updates. My boys don’t tell me a thing, so it’s nice to have an extra pear of ears in the room. {{evil laugh}}

Davis’ Teacher

Dylan’s Teacher

Davis is going into the 4th grade.

Dylan’s going into 2nd grade.

Drake is really upset about it.

Me? Not so much.

Mother of Boys

Grandparent Post

There’s a lot to catch up on since I was out an entire week. So these are a few of the things we were up to our last week before school.

Our last excursion with Rebecca was to the National Scouting Museum. Considering we have 5 boys between the 2 of us, it was a good choice. They all had a blast!

Me? Not so much. Drake was a wild child and became immediately attached to this mechanical mannequin. He kept calling it grandpa and wanting to touch it. Which, of course, is not allowed. His attachment to men is now starting to creep me out. 😉

I chased Drake all through the museum a couple times while the older 2 were checking out the shooting range, pinewood derby track, all the computers, and games. Davis & Dylan absolutely loved it. Davis filled out their quiz and got a huge ribbon at the end. Considering his love language is “gifts” the boy was grinning ear to ear when he received it. Dylan didn’t want to do the quiz so he was naturally bummed when he saw Davis’ ribbon.

They all went hog wild in the Scouting store. Davis is now in the Weblos and Dylan will be a Wolf in a couple weeks so we got their new books while we were there. I’m so appreciative for the Scouting program. It’s perfect for my boys interests, energy level, and love languages. {{YAY for me}}

It was bitter sweet that this was our last excursion for the summer. Davis & Dylan have really impressed me this summer and have behaved themselves better this summer than ever before. We’ve been able to really kick back and enjoy ourselves, not stress out about chores or behavior. Which is a needed change. I got to revert back to “fun mom” and not speech therapist, behavior therapist, social skills teacher, etiquette teacher, drill Sargent and task master. It was a relief.

I’ve really had so much fun hanging out with Rebecca and her kids. She has impressive children! I’ve grown to appreciate and adore them this summer. Drake is especially attached to “Vana” and “Esl“. I don’t blame him, I think I have a crush too. 😉 They are so kind and cute with him. I really love my boys around Rebecca’s boys. My boys just seem to walk a little taller and watch their P&Q’s around them. She has done such a wonderful job raising her children and I can’t hang out with her enough she so amazing. We’ll miss being around them every week.

Considering all the chasing I’ve done with Drake this summer – it will be nice to get back to our little play groups and let other children chase him for a change. Geeze!

We had more friends over this summer than ever before. The boys have finally developed some close friendship. It’s a relief and a blessing. About time!

The boys have discovered Lego.com which uses a 3D software program that’s a dummed down version of the software Jason uses at work. Can you believe that! They are a shoe-in for engineers. 😉

Drake has started singing! This is a huge milestone for the little stinker who won’t talk. “Twinkle Little Star” is his favorite but here we’re singing “Far More” by The Honorary Title, from the Mix CD Weesa made me.

Sunday he said “Drake” for the first time! I screamed so loud in surprised and happiness he got a huge kick out of it and said it several more times. He still won’t say “Davis” and Davis is starting to get a complex.

Crazy kid.

I made several thank you gifts inspired by this Tip Junkie post and According to Kelly. It says, Thank you for “chews-ing” us to come over for dinner. We had a “ball”.

I bought the stuff for lots of extras so I can whip out a cute thank you at a moments notice. I need to get back to being good at little things like that. So I started a ‘gift box’ and have been collecting unique gifts so when I’m invited to an impromptu event I can grab something quickly.

Monica gave me these beautiful sunflowers as a thank you for teaching her class. Gorgeous!

It was a fun week but I really missed my computer. I would have thought that the blogging/communication break would be a nice change. But it wasn’t. I have too many people relying on me and I had spent 2 weeks getting prepared ahead of things for upcoming events. All that preparation was lost with a week with out Internet & phone. Now I’m still behind despite all my efforts to get ahead of the game.

Seriously. Sometimes I feel like I just can’t win.

For instance, Monica asked me to teach a class on getting organized for school to her Young Women. I prepared a while ago and put most of my research on Tip Junkie as well as an online filing system I use. The only problem was that I didn’t have internet or phone service!

Monica couldn’t get a hold of me and thought I was ignoring her and I couldn’t access my research to get the information I needed. I had my first real panic-attack at 3:30 when my friends Mac wasn’t doing what my PC does. Luckily, it was Wendy to the rescue and she watched my kids while I “made it work”.

I was able to improvise and made a 3 page hand out with a fraction of the info I had prepared for the class. I gave each of the girls a copy on 2 sided scrap paper Chanda suggested a while ago. That stuff is awesome. Anyway, we ended the class making beaded bookmarks. I think the girls had fun.

I know you aren’t surprised that we went to the lake, again. It has been a great thing for our family but honestly I’m water-logged. I’m done done done with water and chasing Drake at the lake. I won’t even soak in the tub anymore a quick shower for this girl. I’m in need of some serious dehydrating.

We met up with lots of friends and people from church at Possum Kingdom Lake. We felt honored to be invited and really had a great time. It was my friend Laurie’s birthday and I was delighted that she asked us to spend the day with them on such a special day.

The only problem is that I was on high alert with Drake. And in true form he was as destructive as ever.

Early on in the day, he pulled off the one of the gold letters off the leather seat on their boat! Can you believe it!! I was mortified and honestly it took me several hours to let it go inside my head. I was so embarrassed, disappointed, and sad that he broke something on the boat they’ve only had for a month. Yes, they’ve only had it a month. {{pulling hair out}}

Laurie’s husband kept assuring me that it’s no big deal and that’s why they bought a used boat so they could run it into the ground. But I still felt terrible. I thought I was keeping such a close eye on him and making sure he wouldn’t damage anything. That kid is going to turn me grey before my time. He reminds me so much of Davis when he was a toddler. I’m not sure I have it in me to repeat those years.

It was a good week – a little hectic at times – but a good week. I realized that I really do enjoy Tip Junkie. Lately it has felt more like a hectic job than an enjoyable passion. The Internet break rejuvenated me and helped me realize that I need to simplify a bit – decide on some real goals and implement only those goals. Tip Junkie can’t be everything to everyone. I don’t allow that in real life – I’m not sure why I was allowing it online. I guess it all boils down to boundaries and choosing the “best” not just allowing/doing the good.

Bottom line: I missed you guys terribly and I’m glad to be back!

About Laurie

13 Year Anniversary

Last Monday was my 13th year wedding anniversary. I’m not sure it was a coincidence that our Internet went down, my iPhone stopped working, and since we have Vonage we didn’t have a working home phone either. (If the Internet is down – my home phone transfers to my cell phone. Oops.)

Unlucky #13 – maybe that explains my run of bad luck this year. Um – probably not. I’m a terribly unlucky person. However, there is one area of my life where I’ve been extremely lucky! And it started the day Jason convinced me to marry him.

Yes, Ladies it took a lot of prayer, fasting, and even a father’s blessing for me to calm my freaking out head and listen to my heart. Jason chose me, worked hard to keep me, and we’ve been grateful for those early struggles ever since we got engaged.

I saw him at his worst and he saw me at mine. There hasn’t been any surprises since.

I wouldn’t get engaged until Jason moved back home, enrolled in school, and picked a major. He did and we were very young and very broke when we got married. But my mom made the gymnasium of our church beautiful.

We asked our wedding party to all wear black and white.

Lisa, Annette, & Michelle were my bridesmaids. My mom made their dresses and I still like them today.

The groomsmen wore white tux’s with black lapels and ALL the father’s wore all white tuxedos. Getting these “good ol’ boys” in tuxedos was a true testiment of how much they liked me and welcomed me into their family.

Our first dance.

My mom also made my dress. I totally had to have “puff sleeves”. I wanted a dress just like the one in “Little Mermaid”. How silly is that? Ariel looked so fab with her puff sleeves and skinny waist. I had to do it too. {{giggle}}

My mom made the wedding cake. She even painted the little people on the stairs to match my bridesmaids dresses and hair color. You know I love OTT.

I love this picture of Jason. He’s constantly putting up with my crazy ideas.

Who ever decked out our car were professionals. It took years for all the bird seed to get out of the air ducts. Geeze!

To this day, I consider this special moment the day I stopped sleep-walking through life and really started living it. Jason and I challenge each other and have worked together to have the life we have today.

We’re so much alike. We fight the same, we like the same movies, food, and have the same interests. Together we have created a life that we didn’t think was possible. I’m so grateful that he chose me!!

“J, I love you more than the universe!”

Book Club

I’ve been without Internet since Sunday! {{screaming out of frustration}} So I’m just now getting around to posting about book club I hosted last Saturday. Hopefully you’ll find a fun idea that you can use for your next shindig.

The book I picked was The Host by Stephanie Meyer. I really hesitated picking the book because we already read the Twilight series. Also, I was still mad at her for book #3 which, in my opinion, was a complete re-write of book #1 and should have started at page 520.

However, I really like Sci-Fi and couldn’t resist making my Jane Austen fan club branch out and read something I really enjoy. {{evil laugh}} I was hooked on the first page. It reminded me so much of Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. Fabulous!!

With a new coat of paint, I gussied up the dining room in flowers and fun vases. Wendy and I have been discount shopping during our Girls Camp days to find all the fun finishing touches.

Here’s a closer look.

I found this blog from Today’s Creative Blog and printed out Martha’s template to make flowers for the bottom of my Shirly Temple’s. (a.k.a. Mom-tini’s)

(Aftermath picture – sorry. I realized you would probably want to see what it looks like. But we ate almost all of it. Oops.)

I served this yummy spinach pasta salad I had over at Wendy’s. It’s so easy even I could make it! I substituted the chicken for bagged ready cooked fajita chicken meat, so I could just dump it in. No one got food poisoning and several Book Clubbers asked for the recipe so here it is:

Spinach Pasta Salad

2 bags (10 oz) spinach
1 bunch green onions, sliced
½ C. fresh parsley
6 oz. bag craisins (2/3 C.)
6 oz. honey roasted peanuts
3 cans mandarin oranges, drained
4 C. cooked, cut-up chicken
1 box (12-16 oz) bow tie pasta

Dressing:
1 C. vegetable oil
2/3 C. Teriyaki Sauce
2/3 C. Rice Vinegar (Nakano original seasonal brand)
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. pepper

Prepare dressing ahead of time and refrigerate overnight. Mix all salad ingredients together and add dressing just before serving. This recipe makes a lot. Cut it in half to feed a group of 6-8.

For dessert I made this Oreo & Fudge Ice Cream Cake. Super easy!

As a party favor, I made everyone Glitter Cups!! {{squeal with delight}} I was completely giddy while making them. Chanda had hooked me up with the idea and I was over-the-top excited to make them for everyone. We are all addicted to Sonic drinks so now we can drink them in style.

I got the tutorial from Over The Tipsy Top girls. Those girls are uber fab!

Here are more of their Glitter Cups to get you inspired! Mine didn’t turn out that OTT. I’m a little more structured than that. And I had a terrible time finding everything like the crowns, shoes, etc.

It was such a fun day and I hope my fellow book clubbers felt the love and adoration I have for them. I was more sassy than usual during our conversation but it was all in fun. Gotta keep the converstation mooving and in light hearted fun!

Love you girls!! I think your fabulous and thank you so much for your friendship! {{hugs}}

Update: Ok. Chanda and I did some shopping this week and we ended up finding EVERYTHING at Hobby Lobby in their Princess party isle for cheap! We found the crowns, star wands, even huge diamond rings. We cut up a boa, used several different ribbons, and modged podged black glitter to some cool scrapbooking cardboard chips. Thanks to Chanda’s talent they turned out so OTT, check her blog to see the pictures.

Thursday Happenings

Thursday I was invited to help out with a ‘feed the children’ project organized by another church and a friend. I was asked to bring cookies and a craft.

I choose to do face painting. It’s easy, cheap, and can accomodate the amount of children we were told to expect without running out of supplies.

We kept the options down to only 6 due to my lack of skills and to keep the decisions for the kids short.

Davis decided he wanted to help with the face painting and did an excellent job.

Dylan was in charge of the bubbles. It was such a wonderful experience for the boys and I to serve these children.

Davis took to it immediately and really understood our purpose in giving these kiddos a fun afternoon. However, Dylan was a little shell-shocked. Being my overly sensitive and compassionate child, he better understood the situation these kids are in and was a little overwhelmed. Once we got him a name tag and a job, he felt a lot better and was able to get into the swing of things and play with the children.

All week I’ve been preparing to host Mavens (girls game night) on Thursday and Book Club on Saturday. However, I kept receiving phone and e-mail cancelations. So as I always “create my own experience”, I decided to change it to Movie Mavens!

No need in having Jason and the kids gone for the evening, feeding, and trying to play a game with only a couple of us. We saw that Traveling Pants 2 movie and I was pleasently surprised. I really liked it. Top it off with a lemon icee and great conversation at Starbucks afterwards and you’ve got a great evening with girlfriends.

I’ll admit (only to you) that I was highly annoyed that all my preparations and food were for nothing. Good thing I’m hosting Book Club on Saturday or I would be majorly peeved. I got totally snarky and put a sign on my front door, “Mavens is cancelled to do lack of interest!”

Everyone had legit excuses but it’s a lot of work to have only 2 people able to come. As much fun as it would have been playing uno with Cheryl and Jenny, it’s not quite worth the 3-day prep fest. Luckily my galpal Lisa was able to come on short notice and Katrina ended up finding a babysitter.

The evening was saved and my house is still clean for Saturday.

Anniversary Weekend

Lisa and Billy came down over the weekend and we took them on the seedoo’s for a day at the lake.

Drake was in heaven being in the water with Aunt Weesa.

Billy enjoyed it too.

Jason took Lisa and Billy on a wild ride!

Oops.

Luckily they enjoyed the beating.

Jason and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary a little early. He knew I needed a relaxing day and so he asked Lisa and Billy to watch the kids, while we went out for 2 movies, a little shopping, and lots of yummy food.

The best part was getting 10 hours of consecutive sleep!

We also planned out our 15th wedding anniversary to Italy. That’s a huge dream of mine and we not only talked about the places we want to visit but our personal and family goals to get us there.

Huge thanks to Lisa and Billy for watching the kids and playing with us. You guys ROCK!
