Happy Birthday to LeAnne!

Tuesday, I got a little break from Spring Break with the kiddos and had a double date lunch at Pei Wei with my man and another couple. It was spontaneous and such a delight to have adult conversation in the middle of the day.

That night I helped celebrate LeAnne’s birthday. She’s not only my hair dresser but a dear friend. She has the most contagious laugh and always has a good story to tell.

I was exhausted from the day entertaining the kids but was able to enjoy the evening and simply be grateful for good frienships. It got me thinking…

*What do you appreciate most in a friend?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!! This happens to be one of my favorite holidays. I usually host a huge bash for friends to help celebrate the green day but this year I had way too much going on. {{bummer}}

To celebrate, we played a couple games, St. Patrick’s Day memory and bingo. (of course)

Then we were off to meet up with friends at the movies.

While I was Easter Dress shopping, I found these amazing green wedges. I originally thought I could wear them with my Easter outfit, but I think only Sarah Jessica could pull that off. (They don’t exactly match.) Instead, I decided to let them make their debut on the fabulous day we wear green.

Did you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

Drake is 2!

Friday was Drake’s 2nd birthday so we decided to party Backyardigans style.

Before the party Lisa and Drake had fun with the party hats.

I bought the newest Backyardigans DVD – The Mighty Knights and pulled lots of amazing stuff from NickJr.com. You can print off paper costumes, but I decided to make these easy ones from 1/2 yard of fabric and ribbon. Drake is Pablo the king, Emily is the fairy, and…

Tyson was supposed to be a knight, but he wouldn’t put on the costume. So Dylan wore it instead.

We kept it simple and only invited 2 guests, Emily and Tyson. I had costumes, popsicle stick puppets, bubble wands, and echo phones for each guest.

I transformed the living room into a castle with butcher paper, complete with the Dragon, King Pablo, and the Grabbing Goblin.

We played pin the crown on Pablo, played with bubbles,

(I’m bubbling over with love for my man!) he he

watched the DVD, and opened presents.

While we were singing, Drake folded his arms for the prayer. What a cutie pie.

The boys helped him blow out his candles. I was surprised to find out that Drake new exactly what to do. As soon as the candle was lit, be tried to blow it out.

The party was only an hour (perfect) and so much fun! You could tell Drake felt so important and loved all the extra attention. We got him Geotrax and it was a huge hit will all 3 of the boys. Davis keeps saying that “he loves playing with toddler toys. It makes him feel younger.” ha ha

Another One Bites The Dust

My sister and I have this thing where we assign certain songs to traumatic experiences in our lives. It just makes it easier for us to cope when we’re laughing so hard we can’t feel the pain. What do you think about his song, Lisa?

The news is my Dad filed for divorce from his wife of 2 years a couple days ago. I don’t feel it’s appropriate to go into details, but I feel lots of different emotions. My desire at this point, is that my Dad can learn from his experiences and not repeat them in the future.

Even though he doesn’t read my blog, “I love you, Dad. I’m sorry you are going through such a difficult period in your life. I hope you eventually find happiness and peace. Lots of love and hugs.”

Testing Results for Dylan

I’ve gotten several e-mails asking about Dylan’s diagnosis. Thank you guys so much for your concern and support. I appreciate the cards, girls night invitations, and advice. I need all the help I can get. 😉

I’m so glad that we took the time and expense to have Dylan tested by this psychologist. He ran every test he had on Dylan, but 2. Dylan has been officially diagnosed with Inattentive ADHD.

Here’s what parents with children of Inattentive ADHD say:

  • “He seems like he’s always daydreaming. He never answers when I talk to him. I wonder if he hears me.”
  • “He loses everything. I’ve had to buy him 4 new lunchboxes since school started.”
  • “I’ll ask him to go up to his room and get dressed, and ten minutes later I find him playing with his toys with only his shirt on.”
  • “He can’t retain what he learns because he misses instructions and explanations in school. Even though we work so hard on his schoolwork at night, by the next day he’s forgotten everything.”
  • “Our teacher called her his ‘space cadet,’ and another her ‘random student.”

We’ve been to our pediatrician a couple times now and she grabbed these books from her shelf and made me check them out:

ADHD A Complete and Authoritative Guide and

Taking Charge of ADHD – she said this one will “blow my mind” (yep her words)

I’m reading them and learning a lot. Back to Dylan’s diagnosis. Here are some of his deficits, out of 100%:

Verbal Comprehension – 70%
Working Memory – 60% (below average)
Processing Speed – 34% (what?!?)

Working memory measures the general ability to sustain attention, concentrate, and exert mental control. Processing Speed is the ability to process visually perceived nonverbal information quickly and with concentration and rapid eye-hand coordination.

Understanding Directions – 60%

Dylan showed deficits in both impulsive, sustaining attention, and the sub-categories of vigilance, focus, prudence, consistency, and stamina. In short, Dylan’s performance suggests that he tends to be impulsive, inconsistent, fatigues easily, and fails to sustain attention in either visual or auditory channels over time.

Recommendations:

1. Dylan consult a pediatrition to determine medication regimen.
2. Typical recommendations:

  • Sit next to teacher,
  • Establish eye contact and touch student when oral information is being communicated
  • Provide multi sensory inputs to facilitate learning and retention (backing up auditory instructions with visual aids and hands on learning experiences)
  • Providing instructions one at a time.
  • Providing supervision, redirection, and encouragement
  • Teach organizational skills
  • Establish a team between professionals, parents, and school personnel
  • Allow breaks as needed

3. See an occupational therapist for strengthening perceptual/motor skills.

4. Check out other resources: Taking Charge of ADHD, Driven to Distraction, Homework without Tears.

5. Individual psychotherapy may prove helpful in promoting and enhancing social skills and self-control.

I realize this is a LOT of information, but I thought that if this could help one other mother out there then it would be worth it.

I never would have realized that Dylan was having these kinds of problems if we hadn’t had him tested. I’m glad we have a diagnosis but I’m more appreciative of all the individual tests that confirm what specifically we need to work on.

Rescheduled!

The “Emma’s Garden Party” for church was rescheduled for last night. I sat at the blogger table with Mandy, Jen, and Carrie. It turned out to be a fun night – the food was so yummy!

Needless to say, set up was a lot faster and we included a few extra things to make it even better. To add to the good fortune (Karma and I made up), the men were playing basketball that night. So guess who batted some eye lashes and got all 8 of my trees loaded into my van with out lifting a finger. he he

I’m thinking we should change Enrichment night to Tuesdays, so the guys can clean up the tables and chairs every activity. That solves the “clean-up” committee problem. 😉

Afterwards, Trish and I went to see The Other Boleyn Girl. I had read the book for book club and really liked it! Of course the book goes into more detail which is worth the read – but the movie was so well made and a must see, A-.

My family is going through more drama {{sigh}} but while I was watching this movie, I could look on the bright side. At least my parents never tried to pimp me out and I’m blessed to have an amazing relationship with my sister. How’s that for positive thinking. 😉

Big Boy Bed!

What’s new at our house? A big boy bed!

Over the weekend Jason got on Craigs List and found a toddler bed for Drake. I was impressed because we decided to look online Friday evening and by Saturday afternoon it was in our house and fully assembled. Thanks Honey!

The older 2 boys had a race car bed, so we thought it only fair for Drake to have a similar one. Isn’t this fire truck so cute!

Drake loves it. Unfortunately, he’s still waking up several times a night. Now he just walks downstairs and cries at my bed instead of screaming in his crib. Hmmm. I’m thinking habit.

My SIL got this “Mr. Grumpy” shirt for Drake. Talk about appropriate. Do you like how he posed for the picture. 😉

Miss Pettigrew

Friday night was girls night and we went to see Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. I’ll give it a C+. In case you don’t already know here’s the plot outline:

“Guinevere Pettigrew, a middle-aged London governess, finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job. An attempt to gain new employment catapults her into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse.”

I loved Amy Adams performance. Personally, I think her quirky character made the film. Warning! There’s some nudity in it. I’m personally not a fan of a hairy butt crack – but that’s just me.

However, this week I just might try the “bathroom towel” scene on my honey. I’ll have to practice in the mirror a couple times to see if I can get the positioning just right. FOTFL!!

It’s not a must see and please don’t drag your honey’s to it. But if you’re looking for a night out with the girls with fun conversation at Starbucks later – consider yourself hooked up.

Bye Bye Basketball!

This weekend was the first weekend we didn’t have basketball games! Basketball season for my boys is finally over. Wooo hooo! Yes, that is a picture of Davis’ male coach wearing a dress. I have no idea what that’s all about – something about a bet with the kids. hmmm

I can’t tell you what a relief it is to be finished with practices 2 – 3 times a week and games on Saturday. We are finally free. (Until swim team starts.)
