Twilight Songs

I know this post is going to seem like I have WAY too much time on my hands. But life is kinda stress full right now. {{pulling hair out}}

How do I deal with it? Like I always have, through music.

I’ve been on my computer all afternoon. I’m all caught up on Tivo and without movies in my mailbox. So I thought I’d YouTube some fun music while I frantically tried to answer all the “to do’s” in my inbox. Here’s what I found. Enjoy!

Happy Easter

Whew! We made through Easter weekend. I don’t know about you but ours was crazy packed with lots of Easter Egg Hunts, parties, and family traditions.

Egg A House

We Egged Houses with the boys. This year I let them choose who to egg. They had such a great time but were bummed that I didn’t have more eggs. Note to self – more eggs next year!

Decorate Eggs

After Dylan’s soccer game, the boys were ready to decorate eggs.

I bought an egg spinner this year and it has a big hit!

Party Hardy with Friends

Some friends hosted the most “egg”credible hunt on Saturday.

They live next to a green belt and the kiddos had a blast trying to find eggs.

The little guys searched for eggs inside the back yard while the older kiddos went into the green belt.

By this time Drake is now a seasoned pro at finding eggs. How many hunts did we attend this week? Way to many…

I love this picture of Jason with the older boys. The evening was seriously so much fun. The food was AMAZING!! Hopefully, I’ll get some new recipes in my inbox this week. 😉

Easter morning was really low-key this year. I was proud of myself for not going overboard like I normally do.

The Easter Bunny brought a new Wii game and candy. Davis said that this was the best present the Easter Bunny has given them. {{whew – officially off the hook}}

I think it’s funny that the boys don’t believe in Santa but they believe in the Easter Bunny. Too funny!!

Drake had a great morning with his bubbles, candy, and Easter Bunny on a bike. Who knew that thing would be such a hit!

I love how their outfits came together this year. I wanted to go a bit loud since this is probably the last year Drake will wear what I tell him too. 😉

All my boys!

Do not ask me what is happening with my crazy hair. I haven’t had it colored or cut since my surgery and it’s obviously developing a mind of it’s own. Geeze I’ve got to get into my hair dresser!! {{help}}

Jason got out the tripod and tried to take a family picture with all of us. So here we are!

We ended the day with friends over for dinner. Can you believe I didn’t take a single picture? I guess I was too busy playing hostess and having a great time. All of the kids were either upstairs or outside. It was quiet and fabulous. Once the men went upstairs to play Guitar Hero & Darts, the women sat and played Sequence. We had such a peaceful day!

Girls In The City

After being cooped up in my home for 3 months straight, a girls weekend was a must! My sister, Melissa, and I planned what we wanted to do and I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to it.

Well. Keeping in mind that I have the worst luck on the planet; Melissa’s husbands grandfather died. Therefore, Melissa wasn’t able to come and party with us. {{massive bummer}}

Take this as a warning to any of you who plan an event with me in the future. You never know what my bad juju will bring into your life! Consider yourself warned. {{wink}}

Even though Melissa couldn’t make it, we decided to go ahead with our plans anyway. “The show must go on!”

Since, I’m still not able to sit in a car for very long, so we decided to stay local and check out the city. Lisa and I saw some movies, went shopping, and ate at the new 560 restaurant owned by Wolfgang Puck.

It’s an Asian themed restaurant that slowly rotates around so you get a 360 view of the city 560 feet in the air. It was so nice to dress up and eat at a swanky place with my Sis.

The food was delicious but a bit too hoity toity for my taste. I felt like I had to be on my best behavior. {{which takes a lot of discipline}} Lisa and I chatted, enjoyed the food, the view, and were entertained by the gay men sitting across from us.

We used the restroom before we left and the Lady in front of us didn’t know how to flush the toilet. It was really funny!! Since we did, Lisa and I felt a little less W.T. after that experience. 😉

We ended our weekend with pedi’s. Which was much needed since I hadn’t been able to touch my feet in months. Jason tried to help a girl out and trimmed my toe nails. Needless to say that was a 1 time occurrence. Geeze.

Lisa went fun with blue and I went bold with blood red. {{I’ve been watching way too much Twilight.}}

Thanks Lisa for such an amazing weekend!! I just adore my sister. She makes me laugh and gets me to let loose and kick back. I love myself when I’m around her.

Idols in Concert

I can’t believe that I’m just now getting around to blogging about this. It must be a sign that life is just too busy. {{sigh}}

Anyway, Chanda and I went to see the “Idols in Concert” at the Dallas Symphony. They were past Idol contestants: Melinda Doolittle, Gina Glocksen, Chikezie Eze, and Phil Stacey perform alongside the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

I love how Chanda is always up for an adventure. Hey, me too! {{snicker}} We had such a BLAST.

This was our view. Yes, we had the cheap seats. They weren’t nose bleeds they where behind and above the stage. It actually turned out be really cool because we were so close to the performers. They were each so kind to us and turned around to sing and wave several times throughout their performances.

Melinda Doolittle

First the Dallas Symphony played. Then all 4 of the Idols came out and rotated playing individually and as a group. Melinda was adorable. You can tell that she was eating up the experience and was just glad to be there.

Gina Glocksen

During Gina’s performance, she commented about the 14 year old couple who were cuddling in the pew behind Chanda and I. Seriously, they looked way too young to be so affectionate with each other. It was weird to see.

Chikezie Eze

We were so close, Chanda could read the music title on the symphony’s sheet music. So we got a heads up on what song was playing next. Yeah not me, I’d have to have glasses to see that. 🙁

Phil Stacey

Since we were behind the stage and everyone in the theatre could see us; when the lights were bright we clammed up and sat in our most graceful position. However, when the lights were dimmed we sang along, giggled, and danced.

At the end of the show, we didn’t brave the teens and wait in the long line for the meet & greet. We decided to just snag a quick snapshot of each of them before heading out to the valet.

Afterwards we were dancin’ queens and sang along to movie sound tracks all the way home. Thanks Chanda for coming with me last minute and making it such a fun night!!

Thank You’s

I’m terribly embarrassed. I am just now delivering my Thank You cookies for people who helped me and my family out during the back trauma of ’09.

Now that physical therapy is behind me and I’m caught up on to-do’s; I can finally take the time to properly thank those amazing women who had my back when mine stabbed me in the back. {{literally}}

It took me 3 batches before I perfected my friend Lisa’s cookies. I know, it’s seriously so sad. I can not cook for the life of me. I’ll admit {{only to you}} that I burn the break-and-bake cookies. It’s terrible.

However, I’m now the proud baker of melt-in-your-mouth homemade cookies. Thanks to Lisa for her amazing recipe! The secret ingredient, real butter. I won’t even admit how many packages of butter I had to read to find “real butter”. {{Geeze, I hate to cook.}}

At any rate, I wanted these women to know how much I appreciate their service and so it was worth all the effort in the kitchen.

My mom made these darling flower tags with a pearl butterfly. Thanks Mom! They’ve already been copied by a friend in my Ward (church). Maybe one day they’ll be famous. 😉

Mother of Boys

My Girl

Davis has been in this cutie’s class the past two years and since she lives a couple doors down, she’s become such a great friend. I just love having her in my home.

She’s willing to do just about anything Davis comes up with. Sometimes his antics are quite funny. As I went outside to check on them, they reminded me of the movie “My Girl”.

I don’t remember the actual plot of the movie but the dynamic between the two is pretty similar.

Ahhh, to be a kid again.

Mother of Boys

Say Cheese!

There are many things I love about our area and there are a couple things I could do without. The large hail is one of them! However, the boys thought it was very cool.

{{Cutie Ty is such a poser!!}}

Yep, another Peek-a-boo!

This time with underwear. {{at least it’s clean}} Too bad he won’t hear it on his bottom. {{sigh}}

News Worthy

I’ve had a pretty exciting week as far as blogland goes. I finally got through all my e-mails (again) and I had some treats awaiting inside.

Usually my e-mail is a lot like snail mail but instead of bills it’s “please do this for me”, or “I want”, or a ton of “to dos“. However this week was completely different.

First, I was asked to participate in a survey about blogging for Maren’s thesis. It was really cool and I can’t wait to see the results of all the women who participated.

Next, I was “spotted” as one of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM’S DIY Moms. I’ll be featured on Julie Mulligan’s blog, the lifestyle expert for 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, the week of April 6th. I’ll receive a free bouquet of flowers as well as a promo code for my readers to receive 15% off of flowers from 1-800-FLOWERS.COM.

Lastly, I was asked if I would be willing to be interviewed by Mary Kaye, a Media Specialist for LDS Stake Public Affairs for Carrollton Stake. We met today and had such a great time chatting about one of my favorite subjects, blogging. It just might be featured in a local paper.

I actually think I made it through the interview without saying one “switch word”. Talk about a relief! {{holy crap it was hard – ha!}}

What a great calling Mary Kaye has. I bet she gets to meet some crazy cool people every month. I’m so glad she decided to slum it and interview me instead. {{teehee}}

Too bad she lives so far away, she was a ton of fun and would fit right in with the rest of my friends. She was so easy to talk to and simply delightful!

I’ve been feeling a bit burnt out and over-worked lately and this was exactly what I needed to get re-energized and excited about what I love to do.

**Warning! Gush Fest**

Disclaimer: I feel compelled to share my feelings and gush a little on the women who have helped me during such a dark time. Please note this isn’t a brag, it’s a tribute to those women who have have consistently been there and to those who continue to lift me up.

This post is about F.R.I.E.N.D.S. (Like my reenactment above. HA!) This topic has been on my mind a lot lately and was even more so before my back injury.

It was inspired by Celia Fae’s post on ‘Homies’. She cracks me up with her sharp whit and fabulous definitions. She has a classification for pretty much everything! In her post she defines different types of friendships. I would classify myself as the Friend Collector.

According to Celia, “Friend Collectors don’t acquire friends willy-nilly. They are deliberate. Friend Collectors find people who are very interesting or excel in one area, and then they befriend them. “

I wouldn’t say I “collect” friends per se because I’m loyal to the core when it comes to friends. However, I am very deliberate and selective in who I choose to let into my life. I do try to choose people who have characteristics that I wish I could have or ones that I am working on developing.

I usually have terrible luck in life, but when it comes to friends I’ve been very lucky. Lucky in the fact that I’m surrounded by so many incredible women that I cherish and love to be around. Many of them probably don’t even know how much they mean to me.

First up is my sister Lisa. She brings out the “fun Laurie’ and we have the craziest moments together! We talk at least 3 times a week and nothing is off the table. She already sees me as the person I wish I could be and for that I’m so grateful.

My Angel in life is Wendy. She has been a fun friend and is always up for participating in my crazy antics. But for 12 weeks she took such good care of me and scheduled child care, meals, and mothered Drake at least one day every week. All the while eliminating my guilt and allowing me to heal properly. The service she performed for me and my family is unmeasurable.

Chanda & A.J. bring beauty and joy into my life. A.J. insists that I’m her friend not Chanda’s which totally makes me melt. I adore our adventures and play dates. Chanda is always up for a good time and I am too, so it’s a great match.

Christina was Davis’ 3rd grade teacher and we’ve remained close friends. She came and visited me every week while I was recovering. We share a passion for reality TV and watched the Bachelor together religiously. We have great conversations and she completely over looks the fact that I’m a non-recycling, SUV-owning, Republican, Mormon. 😉

HA! I have no idea what she sees in me but we have the best time together. She adores my boys and I absolutely adore her. I don’t know who has the bigger crush on Christina; Davis, Dylan, Drake or Me. hmmm?

I think the easiest friendships to maintain are the ones who have kids your kids ages. I have such a strong bond with Wendy, Laurie M. and Tricia. We have vacationed together with our families, spent summers together on the lake, carpool to Scouts, holiday events, dinners, etc. They are amazing women in their own right and I really appreciate the family bonding times we have together. I’ll come up with any excuse to see them. 😉 Yes, I’ll even bring my kids. They can actually put up with all of us. {{cheesy grin}}

Lisa is another Angel and a friend just like Wendy, Laurie M, and Tricia. Lisa fed my family and mothered my little boy every week for 12 weeks. I’ll always cherish her service and friendship. Jason and I love to double date with Lisa and her man as well as hang out together as families. She’s so easy to be around and has a big heart not to mention the most amazing cook!

Celia has also defined the Types of Church Friends. These are a few of my church peeps. I feel so blessed because I love these women and choose to hang out with them because of who they are, not the callings we’ve shared. Each one possesses an inner strength that blows me away. I feel like a better person when I’m around them.

I’m also blessed to have Blogging Church peeps. HA! These are the girls that share my passion for blogging and are deep in the throws of motherhood. They are so much fun to chat with and keep me entertained during those mandatory meetings. Even though my youngest is their oldest’ age, they make me feel apart of their group and young again.

Due to scheduling conflicts, I had to drop out of Book Club & Mavens. {{teary}} I know the sacrifices we make for our family. I’ve missed these girls so much the past couple of months. I feel a little bit of an emptiness now that I don’t get to see them regularly. (Sadly, not everyone is pictured but you know who you are!)

Each one of these ladies is an amazing woman in her own right. This group is so diverse and every person brings a completely different personality and style. These women were my first really close friends when I moved here. They’ve consistently been there at least three times a month with birthdays and movie nights. I value their friendship and the influence they’ve had on my life.

I hope they know that they can call me at any time. I’ll be there for a girls night out, movie, a shoulder to cry on or laugh at (I mean with), food, child care, whatever. They mean the world to me. {{hugs}}

I’ve been so impressed with these friends who have traveled to see me several times while I was laid up in bed. We aren’t neighbors and so their drive and sacrifice to visit me meant the world. I honestly feel like they have given so much of themselves that at times, I feel completely undeserving of their friendship. Their souls are so giving and alive that I straight up just feel blessed that they let me come hang out with them. {{teehee}}

We have such an open and honest friendship and one that is completely different than many others. It’s such a breath of fresh air. There’s not much I wouldn’t do for these amazing women and I hope they feel my love and admiration for them. I got your back!

Then there’s my Park Glen friends. Dude, they know how to have a good time!! Any excuse to see them; count me in. I tried so hard to buy a house in their church boundaries but no such luck. Talk about a disappointment.

However, the PG Sista’s haven’t held it against me and still invite me to birthday dinners and holiday parties. Thank heaven!! I love their company and energy. Talk about a fantastic group of women.

Melissa and I were friends in Katy and then became even closer friends when she moved to Utah. I think it was because we had to schedule in the time to talk and see each other. We’ve taken some crazy fun trips. But most importantly, she’s helped me grow in ways and experiences that I never thought possible. Because of her influence I’ve taken a course on Real Estate and found a passion I didn’t realize I had.

Lisa and Melissa are “vacation friends” and so between the 3 of us, our trips always turn into an adventure! She has recently moved to Houston and I’m looking forward to the day I can stand to sit for 4 hours to go visit her. {{hugs!}}

I’ve traveled to see my dear friend Diana at least 6 out of the 10 years that I’ve known her. We met at BYU and have been close friends ever since. We celebrated our 10 year anniversaries together and had a blast! She knows how to have a good time. 😉

She has yet to come visit me in Texas. I think I should start campaigning now for her to come visit me this summer. What do you think?

These are my Life Sentence Friends. It sounds like a negative but these are some of my favorite people in life. You know, the ones you were friends with during a significant time in life. For me, these are my friends from Katy when I was a new mom of 2 boys. When I struggled with Davis’ diagnosis of Autism during Dylan’s terrible two’s. These women probably have no idea how much they mean to me or how valuable their friendship was and still is during such a difficult time.

I have their picture in my room and therefore I think of them often. Those pictures are a reminder of how hard life was and that because of their encouragement I survived. I hope to do the same for others.

I adore all these women in my life, and those I don’t have pictures of, and I hope you each know that I’ve chosen you deliberately because you are amazing. I’m hoping that your specific character trait which I admire will rub off on me in one way or another. Bless you for being in my life. I consider myself a better person because of your influence.

xoxo

Giving Up Chocolate

So my Visiting Teachers gave me a bag of dark chocolate with this story. I thought it was pretty great. Apparently, so did Drake.

Giving Up Chocolate

“I was walking down the street when I was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless woman who asked me for a couple of dollars for dinner.

I took out my wallet, got out ten dollars and asked, ‘If I give you this money, will you buy chocolate with it instead of dinner?’

‘No, I had to stop eating chocolate years ago’, the homeless woman told me.

‘Will you use it to go shopping instead of buying food?’ I asked.

‘No, I don’t waste time shopping,’ the homeless woman said. ‘I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive.’

‘Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead of food?’ I asked

‘Are you NUTS!’ replied the homeless woman. I haven’t had my hair done in 20 years’

Well, I said, ‘I’m not going to give you the money. Instead I’m going to take you out for dinner with my husband and me tonight.’

The homeless woman was shocked. ‘Won’t your husband be furious with you for doing that? I know I’m dirty and I probably smell pretty disgusting.’

I said, ‘That’s okay. It’s important for him to see what a woman looks like after she has given up shopping, hair appointments, and chocolate.”

HA!! Isn’t that funny? I just had to share it.
